Hydrogen exploration

HydrogenHydrogen is not explored for, it is found by accident for similar reasons to helium.

As part of the Transition the World is seeking sources of hydrogen. As of 2020, the majority of hydrogen (∼95%) is produced from fossil fuels by steam reforming of natural gas, partial oxidation of methane, coal gasification or electrolysis of water. All of these methods require fossil fuels and are extremely inefficient, some three times less efficient than generating energy directly.

Natural sources of hydrogen do occur and such finds are large enough they can be used to reduce the substantial carbon footprint created by manufacturing hydrogen.
